SiloMag #38

It seems that it does nothing that we started the year, and we are already opening the year. How fast for the time, right? Above all, when it is a pleasure to bring every two weeks the articles and resources that have most attracted our attention about graphic design, web design and WordPress. The truth is that there are almost always small wonders that inspire us every day.

And in this SiloMag, about graphic design, a reissue of books with new covers, typography in movement, and a video about combinations of sources. In web design, a pair of illustrations created with HTML and CSS, a tool to animate images. And on WordPress, we talk about multilingual sites, a new WordPress beta, and a guide to update WooCommerce.

As always, we hope you like it, and you can leave us any suggestions in the comments!

36 Days of Type typography challenge. In Abduzeedo have been posting some of their favorite entries and every time they do they tend to say that it was the coolest. Which is not an overstatement. The problem is that the next day they go and find another entry as cool or even cooler than the previous one. For this post they share Meeta Panesar’s artwork.

Font combinations: fonts that go together

fonts combinations

When designing a layout, you can use at least two fonts for the text. Magazines, books, websites and pretty much everything you design will look better if you combine fonts properly. Font pairing sounds easy, but in reality, it’s actually difficult. You need to find font pairs that complement each other, don’t fight the eye for attention, and harmonize within the design. When pairing fonts, you need to make them concord or contrast, but don’t conflict. In this video you’ll see ways of combining fonts and then you’ll be shown popular combinations that you can use in your designs.

One of the most commented topics during the last weeks is this illustration created only with HTML and CSS. Thanks to Atom, and to a reduced use of SVG, Diana Smith has created this marvel.

Navigating through Codepen, sometimes you find projects more typical of graphic design than web design. In this case, they are illustrations with a completely different style than the one we brought you just before. But that perfectly combines a colorful design through the use of SVG, with some incredible animations. The best thing is that you enter the pen of Julia Muzafarova to see it yourself.

curtains.js – tool to animate images

Curtains.js was created with just that issue in mind. It is a small vanilla WebGL javascript library that converts HTML elements containing images into 3D WebGL textured planes, allowing you to animate them via shaders. You can define each plane size and position via CSS, which makes it super easy to add WebGL responsive planes all over your pages.

Your site may not use all of the previously-mentioned items, but I included them anyway.
