Infographics: Create your Colour Palette with the Chromatic Circle

The chromatic circle is not new to us. We know its operation perfectly and we know that it is very easy to make colour combinations. These combinations will help us when creating our colour palette, whether for a graphic, web or art project.

You can read the detailed explanation of each of the combinations in this article, but we wanted to make an infographic to highlight the main characteristics of colour to serve as a summary to keep it always present when we need to create our colour palette.

At the same time, we have already seen on other occasions the steps to create our colour palette, but it never hurts to remember them to be clear from where to start.

Let’s start with colour!

The basics of colour

Although at school from an early age we are told about the classification of colours by primary and secondary, as well as cold and warm, it is something that we can forget over time; but it is the first step to understand how to combine colours.

It is a very general division, but at the same time a very comfortable one to define a range. We can decide from the beginning if we want to stay with warm or cold colours or if we like to combine them together to create contrast.

Colour psychology

About this, as you know we have several specialized articles where we can see the study of each colour and what they represent. We can see them by colours: red, blue, orange, yellow, green, pink…. in this quick guide or in infographics about the most used colours.

But in this infographic we show you a summary of what each of them represents, remembering some of the main feelings they convey. Remember that each of the colours represents more of a feeling, so the use we make of them, will determine what we want to show.

Combinations with the chromatic circle

With the chromatic circle we can create all the combinations we want. In fact, on many occasions (at first,) it is the first step to reach the colour palette we are looking for.

If you want to expand your knowledge about the combinations you can do it in this article, as well as some practical examples of combinations with colours.

In this infographic you can find the most common combinations in a more visual way. The “custom” combination, as we were saying is the final step for those who already dominate the chromatic circle and can take full advantage of it.

Create your colour palette

Once we have decided on which combination we are going to create our palette, it is important to create a unique palette that can only be ours. We have our main colour, which will gradually go from being “red” to being a special code that defines it, and so with the other colours of our palette.

The simplest thing is to add neutral: white, grey or brown colours to complement it and thus increase the number of colours that form. Once we have it defined, we only have to play with dyes and shadows until we reach to those shades of which we spoke that will make our palette ours.
