We already talked in the article on 7 Google Font combinations about the main basic rules of font combinations with examples, in which we combined different Google Fonts from different families, getting contrasts between text and paragraph text. The examples we proposed are only a fraction of what we can achieve with Google Fonts, so let’s keep playing with them and their combinations.
Combinations within the same family
It is well known that we love Google Fonts for its versatility and ease in web and graphic designs (if there is a clueless, they are also free 😉 ) Thus, today, the combinations that I propose are Sans Serif Google fonts, with the peculiarity that we will only use one font family in this article.
We have said several times that sometimes, when the family is large, we can get everything we need with a single font which we will use different types. It does not mean that we should put aside the principles of font combinations but reach them with the simplicity that gives us a font family: contrast between paragraph text and title, readability for paragraph texts and of course the combination of 2 or 3 fonts (in this case 2 or 3 types of the same family.)
What is a Sans Serif typeface?
Today, the 5 Google Fonts we are going to see are Sans Serif. A typeface without serifs is called sans serif from the French word sans, meaning “without”. An example of this typeface is on this article. We recommend using Sans Serif typeface when reading is to be effected through a digital medium, such as a computer, tablet or Smartphone, while when the letter is to be printed, Serif is more common to use. Common examples of these fonts (before the appearance of the Google Fonts) are Arial (sans serif) and Times New Roman (Serif). Fonts living with us since time immemorial (and unfortunately, cohabiting with comic sans ) that are already out of date.
As you can see, some of the fonts that we show you are in the Top 3 SiloCreativo, but when we find something (in this case a typeface) that works, we like to experiment with it to get the maximum performance. I have said that the third is my favorite, but which one could it be? 😉
LATO
It is an elegant and clean typeface. It has 10 types within the same family, so they can combine easily. We will always use those with more weight for titles, such as black or bold, italics or medium for subtitles, and a lighter but with authority for reading, for paragraph texts. It is important to note that it is the heaviest of the group.
SOURCE SANS PRO
In this case this typeface has 12 types within the same family, so we can create very complete projects without introducing other typefaces. It is very light so it is recommended for use in web works.
ROBOTO
Of course this one is my favorite! Why? Because it has a large family of 12 types that combine perfectly, it includes italics, light, blod and black, and is very light, so its use in web projects is totally recommended. It is clean, elegant, current, light and very legible. I think I cannot say much more about a typeface 🙂 . Besides, you know where to see an example, don’t you?
RALEWAY
It is a clean, elegant and modern typeface. His family has 9 types. The peculiarity is that it does not include italics types, but being so large, it is easily combined with the use of different thicknesses. This one is also heavy.
OPEN SANS
With 10 types in the family, it is a very versatile typeface for use in all types of projects. It is also very light, so it is widely used in web projects.
All typefaces we have seen have common characteristics: they are Sans Serif Google Fonts and have a very large family. But they all have details that make them unique. When we talked about colour range we said that with Blue is hard to be wrong, well, with these combinations is hard to be wrong too.
I am sticking with Roboto, but any of them are perfect to combine. Which one do you choose?
