Knowing Janice: Our WordPress template for fashion bloggers!

A few months ago we presented our template for WordPress: Silvio, perfect to display photos of your summer trips. So now we are pleased to announce … that we have a new template, Janice!

So here’s Janice! A template for WordPress perfect for fashion bloggers and lifestyles in which to display your outfits. Clearly it is “responsive,” so you can enjoy it on all devices being your website always optimal.

As you can see the design is simple, giving greater importance to images. That is why we opted for the the black colour, which as you know is very attached to the luxury and elegance. It is a blog very easy to use but in which we incorporated a new feature that will help you for sure. Let’s see it! 🙂

A simple but sophisticated design

As we advance, Janice design is minimalist, playing with black and white, making the “home” on a canvas in which order the different items. Everything has a reason and as we discussed below, each item has the possibility to be displayed in different sizes according to what we need. Everything has a hierarchical order to the choice of the author.

Concerning fonts, as I said on the article in font combinations, the chosen one is the Google Font Lora, perfect for its refined and elegant style and high readability. Thus in Janice we show a combination within the same family. We use the Bold type for titles, and the regular for text. In addition we also play with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters to create hierarchy between them.

Moreover, as we advanced, the predominant colour is black, although we found some shades of grey on the links. The different outfits are the principal and the outstanding images of each article must be ready for display in all their splendor and power.

Customization options

We like Janice without header image and with white background, but if you are a lover of the patterns, do not worry, Janice has the option to upload a pattern to put on the bottom of the web or an image in the header.

It also has two spaces in which to put your logo in the center and in the menu bar to do not stop seeing your brand when you are scrolling.

As Silvio, we find the sidebar after clicking on the “+” on the menu, but it also can appear on simple pages and articles. You can combine them as you like.

In this way we have five spaces for Widget, independent of each other, three in the footer, one in the sidebar of the posts and pages and the last one in the menu. You can use them all or not, that depends on you! 😉

Different options for displaying your posts on the home page

As I was already saying, in this new template for WordPress, the images are very important, so we wanted to get the best out of each.

Thus we have 6 options where display each of the posts, changing the size of the image and the way in which the content and the position are shown.

So we have three kinds of images: small, medium and large, and we can put each one in the left or right side on the home page. In this way, we can create a mosaic in which the sizes of the images check off hierarchies of it.

janice-layout-post

Medium sizes are perfect for vertical images. One of the problems when showing your photographs is targeting them. Sometimes when we add a vertical we have to do much scrolling to get to see the text, and the image looks cropped. Although all sizes allowed pictures vertically, the medium is our preferred.

As you can see the selector is very simple, you just have to decide what is the best size and location for your image and go!

How to download and install Janice?

Janice is available at Mojo Tarketplace and like all our themes you can use them on wordpress.org installations. If you have any questions you can see here (in Spanish) the requirements to have self hosted at WordPress.

The installation is very simple, but if you have any doubt you can follow this tutorial with the step by step. Sometimes it can help to install the demo content (for your website to appear as the demo) and from there be changing the content for your own.

Once installed … voila! Janice is ready for use and include your content. Enjoy and do not forget that if you have any doubts you can view the documentation or write us!

Happy blogging !!

  1. I really want the right sidebar to show up on my blog post page, not just on single posts and pages. Can someone help me do this or create a work-around?

    1. Hello alex, Thanks for writing.

      Right Sidebar is only available for custom pages and single posts. You can activate it adding Widget via: My Sites → WP Admin → Appearance → Widgets → Right Widget Area.

      However we are thinking about adding this feature to the homepage without altering the blog post page layout.

      Thank you again!

  2. Hello,

    I would like to know how to change the copyright information in my blog’s footer section.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jordan, thanks for commenting.
      If you are using the WordPress.org version of Janice, you can change this via Appearance > Customize > Theme Options > Footer text.

      but if you are using WordPress.com version, they don’t let you change this text. WordPress.com’s policy says:
      “All WordPress.com users are required to maintain the credit links, even our VIP bloggers. Please do not hide or alter text or links for the footer credits or the toolbar. Modifying the style of the footer text (i.e. colors and font size) is fine as long as it’s still readable”

      Hope this helps 🙂

    1. Hello leilaeggan,

      In WordPress.com version of Janice, posts will adapt automatically according to shape and orientation of the Featured Image you set — portrait, landscape, or square. If you don’t set a Featured Image to the post, it will show centered on the homepage. Here you have the different orientations and their layout:

      Hope this helps!

  3. Hi, I’ve got a question!

    I’ve looked at some blogs who’ve used this (beautiful!) template – but the only place I have seen the italic font for the blog posts is the live demo. How do you go about getting the post title to be in italics? Thinking about purchasing. Thanks!

    1. Hi Cate, thanks for writing.

      Post titles are set in font-stye: italic by default. You don’t need to add nothing to get it.
      However, if you want to change this, you can add the following CSS:

      h1.entry-title {
      font-style: normal;
      }

      Hope this helps 🙂

    1. Hi Abby,

      We have tried to make this improvement but unfortunately WordPress team noticed us that this is a major design change and they are not allowed. The reason is that it will affect to all sites that are using Janice changing their design. Sorry for inconveniences.

      Thanks again!

  4. Hello,

    I am having trouble changing the layout of my home page. It is currently showing all my post’s “full content” instead of having the image with a summary and read more link. How can I fix this?

    Thank you immensely.

  5. Hi,

    Can you please tell me if I can change the language of the “reading time xx minutes”? I’d like to have it in Dutch.

    Thanks!

  6. Hello! I am loving this theme so far! Quick question: is there a way to change the color of the highlight, or can it only be yellow?

    1. Hi Cat, thanks for your comment 🙂
      Yes of course, you can use the color you want. You only have to add this CSS with your color code:

      ins {
          background: #c0eeff;
      }

      In the above example the color is set to blue. You can read more about how to add CSS in this post.
      Hope this helps 🙂

      1. Hi Ricardo!

        Thank you for the tip, but it didn’t quite do the trick. Now on tablet and mobile my sub categories do not even exist. How can I fix this? I want them to be an option, just not all displayed when on mobile unless clicked on.

        Thanks!

        1. Hi Sydney, yes I see you point.

          Unfortunately as parent elements is a link, it is not possible to hide the submenu until that parent element is clicked. You can try with this CSS:

          @media (max-width: 991px) {
              .nav-menu li > ul.sub-menu {
                  display: none;
              }
              .nav-menu li.menu-item-has-children:hover  > ul.sub-menu {
                  display: block;
              }
          }

          but when user clics on your parent item, some browsers will follow the link to that page instead of toggle the submenu.

          Thanks again!

          1. That works sometimes yes, sometimes it drops down the sub menus, and sometimes it drops down the sub menu. Any fix to sure this up each time?

  7. Hi Ricardo,

    Is there any way to have different header images by page?

    Also is there a way to have a video header in place of the header image?

    1. Hi Mike,

      yes you can. You need three things:

      – The id of the page or post where you want to put that new image or the category slug. How to find the page id.
      – Upload the image to your media gallery and get the url.
      – Add the CSS using those elements. Here you are how to add it properly to WP.

      The CSS will be:

      .category-personal .image-header {
          background-image: url(http://yoururl.com/folder/folder/your-image.jpg);
      }

      Just change the .category-personal and the url of your image. If you want to add it to a pege, use the id of that page instead of:

      .page-id-35 .image-header {
          background-image: url(http://yoururl.com/folder/folder/your-image.jpg);
      }

      For video you need to edit the HTML via the php files. Best way to do it is to create a child theme.
      Hope this helps 🙂

  8. Hello,
    I have a quick question.
    I already took this janice template and i started tu customize it.
    How can i add the menu with the nine instagram photos down in the site?

    Best regards.

    1. Hi Kanakis, thank you for using our theme 🙂
      Just add the Instagram Widget to the “First Footer Widget Area”. You can find it in Appearance > Widgets.

      Hope this helps 🙂

      1. Thank you,
        It’s the good way but i didn’t already succeed.
        At the main widget menu they say:
        “Your theme has 1 other widget area, but this particular page doesn’t display it.

        You can navigate to other pages on your site while using the Customizer to view and edit the widgets displayed on those pages.”
        When i started to configurate, I had authorized on instagram and next the say me i had to configure.
        But now i see nothing.
        May be it works Next?

        1. Hi Kanakis,
          yes, widget areas are only available through customizer when the page you are visiting can show them. It is the default WordPress behaviour.
          Try editing the widget in the wp-admin dashboard. Modify this link changing example.com for your site (yoursite.com or yoursite.wordpress.com if you are using a wordpress.com subdomain): example.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

          Add and edit the widget there.
          Let us know 🙂

          1. Thanks you Ricardo, It works 🙂
            But Now i have another Problem.
            I already take Ovh Host.
            And I want to transfer now the Janice Theme on the New WordPress.
            When i search in the theme menu, Is no one janice theme.
            And i pay one time for it :P.
            What can i do ?

  9. Ok,
    I pay twice time this Template,
    But when i install it on the OVH host, it’s not possible anymore to put the widget instagram.
    It doesn’t exist in search.
    Help me please.

    1. Hi Kanakis, nice to hear you got it.

      Check if you can get a refund from WordPress.com if you are not going to use Janice there:
      https://en.support.wordpress.com/refunds/

      About Instagram Widget, yes, WordPress.com has much more features than WordPress.org.

      The theme is basically the same, but unfortunately the system is a bit different. To get most of WordPress.com features in WordPress.org, Jetpack is your plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/jetpack/ It will add most of WordPress.com features that are missing in WordPress.org.

      And for Instagram: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-instagram-widget/

      Check the Janice doc to know more about this:
      https://www.silocreativo.com/en/documentation/janice-wordpress-theme/

      Let us know if you need help with this 🙂

  10. Hi Ricardo, can you help?

    I’m told the theme is overwriting this mailchimp subcribe form at the bottom of my site, the font color when you try to type in the email address is white. Can we make it black?

    Thanks,

  11. Hi, and thank you for a nice theme.
    I can’t find the option to place a custom logo in the top menu. Is it stil possible?

    1. Hi Jan,

      to add the second logo you should go to Appearance > Customize > Logo Section.
      Unfortunately this options is only available under WordPress.org version.

      Hope this helps 🙂

  12. The documentation mentions that Jetpack is supported in Janice on WordPress.org, but what about the testimonials and portfolio functionality of Jetpack?

    1. Hi Alex,

      yes, it will work, however as there are no exclusive styles for those custom post types, both will use the normal post layout.

      Thank you for your comment 🙂

  13. Hi Ricardo, and thank you for a nice theme.

    On our page we would like a white top menu, and I hope you can help me with two more questions:

    1. The Fafa-bar does not show in mobile/tablet – maybe because it is white. Can I change the colour of the Fafa-bar?
    2. We would like a bigger logo, in landscape that’s the name of the company. Can I change the size of the logo image, globally on all browsers?

    Best regards
    Jan

    1. Hi Jan, thank you for writing and using Janice.

      You can add this CSS to change the hamburguer menu to black:

      .menu-toggle, .menu-search, .menu-sidebar {
          color: #fff;
      }

      Here you are how to add it: https://www.silocreativo.com/en/modify-add-css-wordpress-theme/

      About having a bigger logo, you can modify the header menu logo dimensions:

      .menu-home a.janice-image-small-logo-link {
          height: 56px;
          padding: 6px;
      }

      or the logo under the navigation menu:

      .janice-image-logo-link {
          max-width: 300px;
          max-height: 200px;
      }

      Play with the number of px until get the desired dimension.

      Thank you again!

      1. Thank you for your help.

        The size of the logo has worked out, but the size of the clickable field to go “home” seems not to change.
        It’s smaller than the logo image, and I have not found a way to adjust it.

        Do you have a tips?
